Wheengee-Whungee Canyon – my benchmark

Capture00WHUNGEE-WHEENGEE CANYON – DECEMBER 2015
Ordinarily, this wouldn’t rate a post, I’ve done it maybe five other times, the first time back in 2001, there are more videos and reports of it on the net than most other canyons, it’s really special and my images certainly don’t do it justice.  So, I guess the reason for this post is (a) I did it with people I really like and (b) it’s now my “benchmark”.

The thing I love most about WW is the green-ness of the place, isn't called The Green Room for nothing.I wanted to see if I was up for it, and thought, if I can do WW then I can continue canyoning and attempting the more difficult canyons; the day that I try to do it and am either stuffed at the end of the day, or hold the party up when I’m trying to climb the hill in or out, then that’s when I should say, no more difficult canyons, stick to under Grade 3s or give it up entirely like John L’E.

So, here we are at the end of 2015, and I’ve just done it.  I had a ball, particularly because Beth L and Andre came along (always fun to canyon with) and Capture 02because I was taking Heather through it for the first time, am pretty sure Geoff S had done it already.

We had all stayed at Mt Wilson so we got a nice early start.  The weather was fantastic and (unlike back in 2001), the track in was dead easy to follow.  The only spot Capture 03that I was unsure of was the dark duck-under section, I sent Andre in first because I just couldn’t see the way out!  We found a small baby bird along the way and re-positioned him/her out of the water on a log (soon to be kookaburra or snake food I think).

When we reached the end of the canyon, we had 3 choices, the Rod S dodgy pass straight ahead (made for mountain goats), swim downstream to the Wollangambe 2 exit (a long walk out), or swim upstream to the Serendipity exit. I voted for upstream and the shorter walk out, I don’t think the rest of the group thought much of swimming upstream against the current, in pools that were 100m long, but I’d done it a few times before so I was happy with that (and the shorter walk out!).

So, each year, I’ll probably do the canyon again, and possibly put up a post which says “Yaa, did it again” and another 12 months of canyoning will be ok!
