Tasmania Freycinet – pick the right weather!

Our first glimpse of the beach through the treesI’d always wanted to see Wine Glass Bay, the photos of it are amazing.  So, we put Freycinet on the itinerary, but our run of great weather had come to an end.  We decided to do the circuit anti-clockwise leaving Wine Glass Bay for last so we could have more time there.  Whilst the first day was perfect weather, the second day was cloudy, drizzly and miserable.

At last down on the beach and the water is incredibleWe set off from the visitor centre, the track is well graded and by lunch time we were down on the beach at the northern end of Promise Bay.  The weather was perfect, the sea blue and clear and it was a good time for lunch, so we set ourselves up for lunch and a swim.

We had this little cove to ourselvesThis is what I’d come for beautiful white sand and clear blue water (albeit a bit cold!).  After lunch we continued walking down the beach eventually at the south end accessing the track which went slightly inland again.

By the time we arrived at the official campsite it was getting late.  The campsite spots weren’t the best, the wind was picking up and there wasn’t much shelter, plus there were quite a few people already Less than average campsite, we'd been spoiled by Walls of Jerusalemthere (some looked as though they’d been there for months).  They have a permanent volunteer ranger there during the summer months to keep the riff raff under control!  During the night, the weather closed in.

Pretty cool rock formationsNext morning we started off inland.  The intention was to climb Mt Freycinet but decided against this when we got close enough because the mountain was in cloud, we wouldn’t have seen a thing.  So, we walked along the ridge in the middle of the peninsula, around lunch time the visibility improved again and we had good views for lunch.  When we got closer to Wineglass Bay the views out over Thouin Bay were pretty spectacular, particularly viewing The Hazards from a distance.

Whale bones on Wineglass bay, a whale or film props?Soon enough we arrived at Wineglass Bay.  This was a bit of a disappointment.  The camp sites weren’t that nice and were actually a bit smelly, plus with the overcast day, the water was extremely unattractive.  We Reassessed The Situation and decided that we didn’t like Wineglass Bay enough to stay the night, so after our swim we set out again.  This would be a very, very long day by the time we reached the car!

We eventually got to The Hazards and the viewing platform (lots of people), and were back at the car by about 6pm.

Would I go back again?  Probably not, too many people for one, you could do it as a day walk, to either Wineglass Bay or the beach on the west coast, but I can’t say it would be on the top of my “must do again” list.  But I would go back there to scramble over the Hazards, didn’t look like many tourists were up poking around there, so possibly worth the trip.   I guess my expectations of Wineglass Bay were way too high!
